I can't say it comes as a huge surprise but information technology'south decently done and answers questions left hanging every bit to why Peter was bitten on that fateful day and stuff.

Before that 3 rather innocuous problems but-and I will repeat it fourth dimension and again-higher up the lot because of JMS' sense of pacing, dialogues and his craft when conveying emotions.

The ii problems with Loki were more fun-oriented - that scene with our 2 characters sharing a hot canis familiaris on a roof speaks for itself- while the other 1 is more fabricated of emotions, with MJ trying to star in Hollywood and a bicycle thief in NY.

Morwen (#503-504). Peter has been interacting with a ridiculous number of supernatural foes under JMS, and I'thousand non sure it'south made any better by Peter maxim in the comic that he's been interacting with a ridiculous number of supernatural foes. It makes 1 wonder if JMS really wanted to write Dr. Strange (or Thor). This is a fine enough story about Peter interacting with Loki, just as with shut to half of JMS' run to appointment, it doesn't feel much similar a spider-story [3+/5].

Morwen (#503-504). Peter has been interacting with a ridiculous number of supernatural foes under JMS, and I'm non sure it'southward made any better past Peter saying in the comic that he's been interacting with a ridiculous number of supernatural foes. It makes i wonder if JMS actually wanted to write Dr. Strange (or Thor). This is a fine enough story about Peter interacting with Loki, only as with close to half of JMS' run to date, it doesn't experience much like a spider-story [three+/five].

Vibes (#505). Over again, JMS' best stories come up nigh when he tells little stories, similar this one about Peter and MJ's relationship and a small crime case [4/5].

The Book of Ezekiel (#506-508). JMS draws his whole Ezekiel saga (and hopefully his supernatural obsession) to an end with a capstone meant to explain everything. The reveal of Ezekiel'south character and his manipulations are both quite squeamish. If I had any complaint information technology's that this is the only story which really gives total credence to the supernatural theory of Spider-Human being's origin, but at least Peter is all the same mocking information technology [3+/5].

Exceptional work. Romita and Straczynski nail it as ever. Perfect introduction of a new hero and villain that builds the existing Spider-Homo universe equally opposed to branching away from information technology.

Beautiful. One of my favorites.

Finally, we get to the end of this Ezekiel storyline just not before some horrible filler that could've easily brought this downward to a ii star if I wasn't so favourable with the culmination of the arc at the end of it.

I think I'm going to save a bigger review for the second read through that I'll inevitably have of this run. I'll mostly talk almost Ezekiel and if he deserved to accept a redemption at all?

2 things I'll mention actually apace on the merchandise that I found to exist a downer: one is downer for the whole Romita/JMS run and one is a sloppy plot inconsistency that I wasn't expecting to run across on a run that'southward been so tight in its plotting upwards until this point.

Kickoff of all, what'southward with the filler, man?
I feel similar this is a perfect fourth dimension to highlight this trouble im having since this trade contained some of the worst filler yet. I don't know if the Spidey/Thor—I Hateful Loki issues are supposed to be crucial to the plot but it certainly didn't need another mystical 'beat 'em upward' story since we take been overloaded with them in the last 6 trades earlier this. It didn't add together anything and was almost tedious to read Loki acting exactly similar Thor and trying to describe humour out of information technology.
The double edge of this critique is that the Vibe consequence later on this Loki story was overnice even though information technology was technically a 'filler' outcome too. The deviation was that in this result characters were progressed and I was engaged with what was happening. I recall I'll impact more on this effect in another review.

My other quick result is why hasn't JMS cleared up the reason for kids in another issue joining some weird mischievous matter that Ezekiel was running? Information technology seemed similar a few issues ago he had a cult happening simply at present there'southward no mention of it and Ezekiel's storyline is supposed to be wrapped upwardly now? So it feels similar JMS has forgotten about it.

There'due south still more than JMS Spidey but this is the end of his collaboration with John Romita Jr. 36 issues spanning the small character moments and big villain fights and splash pages. A conversation with Aunt May about his secret identity and reconciling with Mary Jane, this was a fantastic run. Equally this run introduced Morlun, a driving force of the Spider-verse comic event, this run is indirectly responsible for the best Spidey movie.

But this was a great run for other reasons. There was some casual racism only this series too had Parker see the consequences of sending people to jail and he later re-thinks some of his methods when he has a confrontation with a bicycle thief. A complicated legacy but exist disquisitional of the things you dearest.

The best part though was that JMS posits a new theory of the spider bite. Maybe information technology wasn't the fact that it was radioactive that acquired Peter's powers. Mayhap the spider was dying and wanted to transfer powers before it did. JMS is clearly sympathetic to the latter but keeps it ambiguous for future writers to play with.

Though I came to the book for this one story, which opens the book, the rest of the collection naturally flows from it and makes sense. Spider-man has been encountering more than than his usual share of "magical wackos" (Loki included) and the caption is revealed herein. Though this is Volume 7 of Straczynski's Spider-man run, readers don't need to have read the previous books to follow the stories.

Spider-man and Dr. Strange accidentally unleash Morwen, a chaos sorcerer, from her prison. In Asgard, Loki senses that something is incorrect, that information technology concerns him, and and then he comes to New York to investigate. He and Spider-man must squad upwards to save Loki'southward girl, who Morwen has possessed. I dear how Loki is characterized in this tale. He's not the traditional villain – he's a very powerful, immortal god who'due south disdainful of mere mortals. And has produced hundreds of children across the centuries because it's what Norse gods do! I laughed out loud when Spider-human being asks if Morwen is evil like Loki, and Loki replies "I'm not evil, you vile little creature. I'm…complicated." In fact, the story was packed with sense of humour as i would wait from the witty spider web-slinger. And the scene on the rooftop lonely was worth the buy of this volume!

The subsequent stories all tell the tale of Ezekiel (he has powers just like Spider-man) and why he has come to NYC. How he got his powers has a straight touch on Spider-man and will put him and his loved ones in danger. The story is very well done, with suspense and twists.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this volume. The story-telling was excellent and I thought the art was a peachy complement to it. I liked information technology enough that I am tempted to notice the boosted volumes – which are unfortunately out of print. Highly recommended.
